Day 1 : Arrive Khajuraho
Fly from Delhi to Khajuraho. You will be picked up from the airport and taken to the hotel. Your package includes breakfast daily throughout your stay. Spend the night at the hotel.
Day 2 : Khajuraho
After breakfast, accompanied by a local English-speaking guide, visit the temples. The Khajuraho Temples have erotic carvings only on the outside, not inside or near the deity. They seem to suggest that one must leave one’s sexual desires outside, and then enter to see the deity. The inner deity, in fact, has been likened to the pure soul which remains unaffected by desire while the erotic carvings outside depict the physical transformation that the body undergoes. Not all carvings on the outside are erotic; only about 10 per cent depict amorous postures. The rest are of everyday events in the lives of ordinary people: potters, musicians, farmers. Some believe that the carvings suggest that one must always have God as the central point in one’s life.
The cluster of temples are divided into groups and you will visit the Western group of which the Kandariya Mahadev Temple is the most famous. It is the largest and most typical of all the temples in Khajuraho. It has a 31 metre high shikhara and the temple is lavishly decorated with more than 800 statues, most of which are 1 metre tall.
Then visit the Chaunsath Yogini Temple. Chausanth is literally ‘sixty four’. The temple is dedicated to the 64 yoginis or female wisdom seekers. Don’t miss the Chitragupta Temple with its beautiful sculpture of Lord Vishnu in his 11-headed form.
Around all the temples in Khajuraho are bands of exceedingly artistic stonework showing gods, goddesses, warriors, musicians, real and mythological animals. Stone figures of sensuous, posturing apsaras (heavenly nymphs) carved with a half twist and a slight sideways lean make them seem to swirl out from the flat stone.
Return to your hotel after seeing the temples. Spend the afternoon at leisure. You may, at your own expense, visit some other temples or the Archaeological Museum which has an impressive collection of statues and other sculptures found around Khajuraho.
Spend the night at the hotel.
Day 3 : Khajuraho - Delhi
After breakfast, you will be taken to the airport at Khajuraho in time to board your flight to Delhi.
